How many snow days does Nashville have annually?

Expect about 12 days per year of snow that sticks. Music City USA isn’t know for its snow. There are no ski resorts nearby, and no outdoor ice skating rinks. Yes, it does get cold and yes it is expected to snow every year. In fact, Williamson County School district has planned into their schedule “snow days”. Which gets grade schoolers all excited for when the snow does fall. But they don’t really get to skip a day of school because that day will be made up later. But don’t tell them that and don’t spoil their fun. Getting off school for snow is a real treat, especially when its deep enough to sled and build a snowman in.

How many "Snow Days" does the Williamson County School District schedule?

10 Snow Days days per school year. Williamson county anticipates 10 snow days per winter. Often the snow days are due to the icy back roads that buses must travel to pick up their students. While the city of Nashville has a plan to keep roads open during snow and ice events, their plan doesn’t cover all the bus routes as a first priority. Eventually? Perhaps. But given that the annual snow fall in Nashville is around 4 to 6 inches, the current system of  “Snow Days” is working out just fine.

What is the average inches of snowfall in Nashville, TN?

4.2 to 7 inches of snowfall annually. The averages varies based on the source, but rest assured the amount of snow in Nashville is low compared to many other locations. It is interesting to note that while the snowfall is low that the number of actual days with snow falling is 14 plus! Snow flurries just don’t add enough fluff. But take a look at 2022, it had 13.5 inches of snow, with a white Christmas to top it off.

Per snowfall the average is extremely low. A heavy snowfall in Nashville, TN would be 3 inches or more in a single snow storm.

Nashville: Strumming Along to Music and Memories

Hey y’all, let’s chat about Nashville, Tennessee

– that awesome place they call “Music City” where country tunes flow like the Cumberland River and history’s just as deep. It all started way back when it was a little frontier spot and shot up to fame during some pretty big American moments – think Civil War battles and legends of country music strutting their stuff.

Kickin’ Off in Nashville

Way back in the 1700s, folks settled down by the Cumberland River, called it Nashville after war hero Francis Nash, and before you knew it, boom! The city took off as a river hangout and then hit the big time with railroads hustling cotton around.

War Times

When the Civil War rolled through town, Nashville made headlines as the first rebel capital snagged by Union soldiers. You can still catch those historic vibes at places like Fort Negley which has got stories for days.

Country Music’s Home Turf

But what really puts Nashville on everyone’s lips is its kick-butt music scene. We’re talking Grand Ole Opry level legendary since 1925; this place is pure gold for country fans. Swing by Ryman Auditorium or stroll through Country Music Hall of Fame if you wanna feel those musical roots.

History Hangouts Everywhere

And get this – history peeks out from every corner here! Belle Meade Plantation flashes its fancy Greek Revival style while Centennial Park rocks an Athens vibe with its very own Parthenon because why not? They don’t call us “Athens of the South” for nothing!

Chill Winters with a Dash of Snow Magic

Winter around these parts? More cozy than frostbite-y! Sure we might see some snowflakes now and again but usually just enough to dust things up real pretty-like without overstaying their welcome.

Snowmageddon: Once Upon a Time…

Okay so there was this one wild winter day in 1892 when Mother Nature dumped 17 inches on us – no kidding! That’s right the snow record for Nashville is 17 inches in a single day. But hey, that kind of snowy encore hasn’t happened since. ALthough.. On January 22, 2016, Nashville experienced a remarkable winter event, recording a substantial 8.0 inches of snowfall, marking that day as one of the most significant snow events in recent years for the city.

psst… there is some debate about a 22.8 inches on the February 2-3, 1886 snow storm hitting Nashville , but that was not confirmed by Weather.gov who listed it at 16 inches.

Today’s Snowy Serenade

On those rare snowy days now though? Man oh man does our city look magical under that white blanket making every piece of our past stand out even more against today’s tune-filled backdrop. So come on over to where history meets guitar picks; trust me it’s quite a ride!
